Where the numbers come from
Streaming figures come from Netflix and YouTube, and video call figures from Zoom's published bandwidth requirements. They are listed in our guide How much internet speed do I need? with links to each source. Gaming, browsing, backup and camera figures are SpeedCheckWeb rules of thumb, because their real use varies widely.
The suggestion adds 50% headroom to the total, and never goes below 10 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up. Headroom covers background updates, other devices, and the fact that real speeds vary through the day. Bandwidth is not everything: games and calls also need low latency and littlebufferbloat.
